2001 roadking excessive crankcase vapor venting?
just bought an 01 injected roadking. The crankcase vent hose seems to be putting too much vapor into the air cleaner. To the point that condensation developes on the inside of the air cleaner cover and literally sprays out while riding. after parking the bike it drips water for about 15 minutes. i was told it could be an umbrella seal but i would think that would let oil into the cylinder causing the bike to smoke.any ideas would be appreciated.
i should add that while there is evidence of moisture “in” the engine (bottom of oil cap has a small amount of milky deposit), the oil itself shows no signs of water… no froth or bubbles, and is very clean… with the amount of water i have coming out of the air cleaner one would expect a good amount of water in the oil.
Hi M5,
The Umbrella Valve actually is most likely cause.
It’s mounted at very top of engine,,internally.
It’s supposed to act like a 1-way Check Valve.
When Pistons go Down,,that compresses air in the CrankCase.
That Pressure is Supposed to be vented to atmosphere by the Umbrella seal.
When Pistons begin coming UP,,,,That Creates a Large Vacuum on the Crankcase.
That Vacuum is supposed to be BLOCKED from the Atmosphere by the Umbrella Seals Closing.
:Ideally,,,,the Valves hold Tight and the Vacuum is maintained in the Crankcase.
Untill Pistons head DOWN again.
But This time,,,there’s a Vacuum in the cases,,,So Nothing to Compress.
Any pressure that may rise,,,will again Open the Umbrella and vent.
When the U.V. Fails to Seal Closed,,,
Atmospheric Air is inhaled.
That air is moisture laden.
When it gets Compressed in the Engine by Piston Travel,,,that Moisture Condenses.
Very Common example of the principle is Air Compressors.
They have InLine Water/Moisture filters to keep Air OUT of the Output Pressure Lines.
And Drains on the Air Tank to drain the accumulated Moisture.
In your Bike,,,as with any pressurized gas,,,,it COOLS when it Expands.
The Vent Holes are Very Small to pass all that air volume thru.
That will make Any Moisture “Evaporate”—turn to Vapor.
It’s Heated from Engine and “steaming” already.
Squeeze it thru that little vent hole,,,,,under all that Pressure,,,then as it Exits that Orifice it’s GONNA make a Water Spray.
………………….
The Cure is to Prevent Atmospheric Air from entering CrankCase.
Otherwise it’s ACTUALLY sucking water out of thin air.
And has an Ample supply to draw from.
Blocking that Air Aspiration in Crankcases is the Job of the Umbrella Valve.
If You got Excess water coming from the Engine,,,It’s GOTTA be coming from Somewhere.
Bad Umbrella Seals are Main Path for that,,,
and are a Common Problem.
Replace Them and it will solve the Problem of all that water.

I always hesitate to answer H-D questions.
Majority of people are too defensive against any identification of a problem. They take it as Bashing.
Or,,they’re Experts,,,and perfectly indoctrinated to repeat the mantra “They All Do That,,”That’s How a Harley Is”,,etc, and so on.
It’s YOUR Bike,,
YOUR Money.
Makes me no difference what so ever.
What IS important to ME ,,,is that when someone asks a question,,,they get a factual Answer.
YOU mentioned there’s Water pouring out of your engine.
That’s Not “the engine”.
It’s Coming out of the OIL.
The Water You see was Distilled from Atmosphere,,,
Condensed Internally to Liquid.
And ACTS like Any Liquid that would enter the Engine,,,Including OIL .
The water Drains Down into Sump WITH the Oil,,,and gets circulated around.
Engine Heat Boils it back Out(EVAPORATES it out,,,actually)
And it’s Blown Out of the CrankCase Vent under High PSI thru a Restricted Orifice.
I mean,,,You SEE it your self.
Dont let anyone make you think that’s Normal,,or “They All Do That”,,,,or lead you to accept any myths about what’s happening to your engine.
What’s Happening is,,,You’re riding around with Water Contaminated OIL.
Water FLOATS oil,,,as in OFF of Surfaces.
Even if it Evaporates Out as you run,,,
You are Steadily “Refilling It with Water” from atmospehric condensation.
Yep,,”It’s Broke”
And Yes,,It’s a Known Issue.
Nope,,it dont matter How many “All Do That”….
If YOU want YOUR bike to stay healthy,,,,it NEEDS to be Fixed.
Simply Replacing the Umbrella Seals will do,,,they work Ok,and will last a while.
Or,You have some Upgrade/Mod options.
Either way beats cruising around with a bunch of water contaminating your engine oil.
It’s not what’s coming OUT your motor,,
It’s about whats getting IN.
The Umrella’s job is to Stop It.
It’s simply Not doing it’s Job
Good Luck
