I was born a few years after that date, and I was curious if the actual year, 1984, was anything like the book of the same name?
Yes, I’ve read it several times.
Maybe America wasn’t that way, but what about Russia in 1984?

While the actual year was nothing like the society portrayed in the novel, one could fairly argue that each year since 1984 we have come closer and closer to Orwell’s vision. Take a look at the government spying on its citizens, the rewriting of history (even if it is something that happened a year ago–how about those evolving reasons for going into Iraq?), the “disappearing” of some American citizens off to secret prisons, the control of society through fear of war or governmental reprisals. Those are just a few examples for today, but the foundation was laid long before that.
