Unsung Heroes – Body Armor
Body armor has saved the lives of thousands of law enforcement and military personnel since its invention in 1966. But where did this amazing armor come from? Who created it? Here is some of the history of body armor and what kinds are currently available on the market today.
In 1923 in a small town in Pennsylvania called New Kensington, Stephanie Kwolek was born. A talented chemist, she graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) in 1946. She was hired by the DuPont Company and would work there for the next forty years. One of her research projects was with "high performance chemical compounds." This in turn led her to develop a new synthetic material that would change the way law enforcement protected themselves. Kevlar was patented in 1966 as an amazing new material that did not corrode or rust and was five times stronger than steel. Today, Kevlar is used not only in bulletproof vests and body armor but in "underwater cables, brake linings, space vehicles, boats, parachutes, skis, and building materials…Kevlar is also flame resistant; does not melt, soften, or flow; and the fiber is unaffected by immersion in water." It is cut resistant and provides "flash protection" to four hundred and twenty seven degrees Celsius.
As amazing as this material is, it was only one of the twenty-eight different patents that Stephanie Kwolek would hold. In 1995, she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for her historically important work. The way Kevlar works is just as fascinating as the material itself. "When a handgun bullet strikes body armor, it is caught in a "web" of very strong fibers. These fibers absorb and disperse the impact energy that is transmitted to the vest from the bullet, causing the bullet to deform or "mushroom." Additional energy is absorbed by each successive layer of material in the vest, until such time as the bullet has been stopped."
Kevlar 29, introduced in the early 1970s, was the first generation of bullet resistant fibers developed by DuPont and helped to make the production of flexible, concealable body armor practical for the first time. In 1988, DuPont introduced the second generation of Kevlar fiber, known as Kevlar 129. According to DuPont, this fabric offered increased ballistic protection capabilities against high energy rounds such as the 9mm FMJ. In 1995, Kevlar Correctional was introduced, which provides puncture resistant technology to both law enforcement and correctional officers against puncture type threats.
The newest addition to the Kevlar line is Kevlar Protera, which DuPont made available in 1996. DuPont contends that the Kevlar Protera is a high-performance fabric that allows lighter weight, more flexibility, and greater ballistic protection in a vest design due to the molecular structure of the fiber. Its tensile strength and energy-absorbing capabilities have been increased by the development of a new spinning process. Kevlar body armor has significantly improved the mortality rate of law enforcement personnel and been a major asset both in training and field work for military and law enforcement personnel. For that and incalculable amounts of saved lives, Stephanie Kwolek deserves praise and thanks.
