“Mamma Mia!” Is originality really dead?

Before you go to see “Mamma Mia”, have a look at “Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell”, a 1968 film with Gina Lollabrigida, Telly Savalas and Phil Silvers. How on earth did they get away with remaking someone else’s film without even acknowledging it in the credits?

You don’t have to go very far to find other examples. “Disturbia” is very similar to “Rear Window”, “Body Heat” to “Double Indemnity”, “The Big Chill” to “Return of the Seacaucus 7″, and “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry”, starring the odious Adam Sandler, is a complete ripoff of “Strange Bedfellows”. These are just the examples I thought of while typing this – I am certain there are many, many more. So, maybe the plot is borrowed from another film, maybe it’s coincidence. The point is that it has happened before and it will keep happening. Live with it.
