Conrack (1974)

In the movie Conrack, Why did the principal keep saying “overseas”?

I have a questionnaire on the movie and I can not find the answer to it because it’s an old movie that took place in 1974 {in real life}.

I haven’t seen that movie since it was first released into theaters. But if I remember correctly, the school’s principal, Mrs. Scott (Madge Sinclair), thought of the students as being from a third-world country or “overseas”. When, in fact, they were on a small island off the coast of South Carolina, requiring a boat to get there. The students were from poor families and had not received proper education, even in basic skills such as daily teeth brushing.
