Cry, The Beloved Country (1995)
Cry the beloved country movie/book comparisons?
Hi guys …
I have just finished reading Cry, The Beloved Country. Being a South African expat in the UK, I was deeply moved by the book, and have no idea why I never read it before now.
I have always been interested in watching a movie version of a book (if made) once I have read it.
I have been disappointed many times with movie remakes of books, so am very wary of watching Cry, The Beloved … as I do not want my vision of the book to be ruined by a badly made movie version.
As far as I know, two versions have been made, one with James Earl Jones (1995) another with Sydney Poitier (1951?).
Which version, if either, stays most true to the book? Am I going to ruin my experience of the story by watching the movie? If either, which version should I watch? My main concern is that a lot of details are always left out, and can never really capture the true essence of the story …
Thanks
D

Cry, The Beloved Country
$2.95 When first published in 1948 in apartheid South Africa, Cry, the Beloved Country raised more than eyebrows as a powerful book about the power of unity and an author's unflinching hope of a future where segregation no longer exists. The book summoned feelings of pride, optimism, and anticipation of a long-desired goal. But Paton's lyrical, poetic prose is not your typical run-of-the-mill anger evok... |
