To this day, Al Pacino still remains one of the most watch-able and most sought after actors in mainstream Hollywood. He’s delivered big time in the 1970s and 1980s and still continues to deliver today. His intensity is often unmatched by other actors and his ability to control his emotions of the drop of dime is uncanny. He’s had several fantastic performances through recent history such as his portrayal of Michael Corleone from the uber-popular “The Godfather” series or his portrayal of Officer Frank Serpico in the true story of an undercover cop who attempts to bring his crooked co-workers to justice in the 1970s hit “Serpico”. He then went on to delight audiences in possibly one of the greatest performances of all time in “Scarface”. Pacino plays Tony Montana, the Cuban immigrant who comes to American and works his way up the mobster ladder until he reaches the big time. Pacino has really produced some of the most memorable characters in history. I mean truthfully, how many of us at one time or another have said the phrase: “Say hello to my little friend” as we blast someone with a water gun or in a similar situation. Pacino is truly the definition of terrific actor and he continued to show that throughout the 1990s. What is interesting is that two of his best movies in the 1990s came out in the same year: 1997.

“Donnie Brasco” was yet another true story that Al Pacino took a featured role in. Perhaps he is intrigued by real life stories, regardless, he delivered once again. Al Pacino plays Benjamin “Lefty” Ruggiero a low level mobster who takes a newcomer, Donnie Brasco, played brilliantly by Johnny Depp, under his wing. Over the next couple of years Brasco and Lefty become close although Brasco is actually an undercover FBI agent hoping to gain evidence by joining in with the gang. However, Brasco ends up becoming very close to the mob family and his allegiances start to waver. Before he can completely lose control, the FBI drags him out of the operation much to his dismay. Although he knows the truth, Lefty denies the fact that Brasco was a fed to the rest of the mob family to save him from being targeted, although later on in real life, the truth is discovered. Al Pacino does a fantastic performance as “Lefty”, once again showing that he has the mobster role down cold. However, this was not the typical mobster role. Lefty was also a family man and simply a businessman who got his hands a little dirty. But at the end of the day, he just wanted to live a normal life just like everyone else. This movie is truly one of the classics of movie history and one of the most intriguing true stories out there. This movie is a must see and is readily available if you have cable or satellite TV.

“The Devil’s Advocate” was yet another fantastic Al Pacino movie that came out in 1997. Pacino plays a partner at a major law firm that also happens to be the devil. He recruits a young up and coming lawyer, played by Keanu Reeves to come join his firm. But Reeves soon finds out a secret that he didn’t want to know. This movie is a non-stop thriller and truly worth the 9 dollar movie ticket. Make sure to catch both of these movies on your satellite TVs. Better yet catch them in HD.
