End Of Days (1999)

The First Day Of The New Year But Not The First Year Of A New Decade

Today is the first day of January in the year 2010 which by all means also makes it the first day of a new year but contrary to what many might believe it does not make it the first day of a new decade. This being the case since the first decade of the 21st century has not yet finished, for this is the last year of the first decade and not the first year of the second one. How could this be some might ask and the answer is a simple one.

It coming in the following form that the years were numbered after the birth of Christ and not like it is with a person’s age. A person’s being the case where one is born living the first year of one’s life though it can not be said that one is one year old until one’s time on earth concludes the passing of exactly one year after one’s day of birth and when this does occur one starts upon one’s second year. This being the case since one in fact is older than one’s age. For instance a person like myself who is 42, in fact is older than 42 for he or she is 42 years old plus the time that has elapsed since his or her birthday. In my case with me being born on May 21 and today being the first of January would make my age (more or less) 42 years, 7 months and 11 days old. All of which indicating that I in fact am living the 43rd year of my life. This as well being the case with the counting of the centuries, where we find ourselves in the 21st century though we are in the year 2010 given that we are 9 years plus one day in to the 21st .

Years however were not counted as such but numbered. This meaning that they were given numbers in the following manner:

1 AD (anno domini or year of God) This the 1st year of God or supposedly.

2 AD

3 AD

4 AD

5 AD

6 AD

7 AD

8 AD

9 AD

10 AD This the last year of the first decade.

11 AD This the first year of the second decade.

All of which would make 11 AD the first year of the second decade (not 10 AD) or 101 AD the first year of the second century or 1001 AD the first year of the second millennium and 2001 the first year of the third millennium and not 2000 like many were falsely led to believe by those who simply did not know that there was no year 0. This contrary to how it is with the counting of the centuries or the years of a person’s life; where a person who like myself is 42 years old is in fact living the 43rd year of his life.

Of course we can always say that it is more exiting to see the number of the year change from 1999 to 2000 (as it involves the moving of four digits) than it is from 2000 to 2001. This perhaps being the reason for the bigger celebration at the end of the year 1999 yet this does not mean that the year of 2000 was the first year of the new millennium any more than 2010 is the first year of the second decade of the century we currently find ourselves in. It is with this in mind that I suggest to those who were looking to celebrate something of the sort to wait one more year when it in fact will be just that.

As a final note, we can however say that the 0s (if that is what we may call them) were finished at the end of 09 like the 90s were finished at the end of 99.

Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy play it surprisingly straight in this film by director Ted Demme. Though there are laughs to be had, this is a story about perseverance in the face of a life of disappointment (yet the film was sold as a prison comedy). But Stir Crazy this isn't. Rather, Lawrence and Murphy play a couple of New Yorkers making a moonshine run from New York to Mississippi during the ...
