1997 grand am check engine light?

My 1997 grand am (bought a month ago) had a check engine light on. replaced the o2 sensor, that took care of the ce light. But now car cuts out when you press the accelerator for about the first ten minutes and when ever car sits for 15 minutes or more and you start it back up. Seems to run rich. Unhook 02sensor and car runs fine but gets poor gas mileage. Gonna check vaccum lines tomorrow, any other suggestions?
the sensor before the converter. the one after was replaced with the converter about a year ago. and i did take the sensor back and tried a second one just in case of a faulty one. Also had the battery unhooked for a couple hours since. light stays off with sensor hooked up.
and by poor gas milaege, i am getting 23mpg on a 2.4L with a 5speed manual trans. thinking it should be up around 30mpg or more

cracked plug with a weak (but still strong enough to work slightly) spark can burn unevenly and throw off the sensor.
