Forbidden Planet (1956)
Date of first release of record from MGMs movie Forbidden Planet?
I have a record from MGMs movie Forbidden Planet containing the music from this movie. The movie as far as I know was released in 1956 and my record is dated 1956.wAS THIS RECORD REALLY RELEASED IN 1956 OR IF NOT WHEN WAS IT FIRST RELEASED.tHANKS
That’s an interesting question. I had to do some digging but enjoyed the challenge. Here’s what I found:
Although MGM made the movie, they no longer own the rights. The rights were sold to Warner Brothers and Turner Classic Movies in the late 1990’s.
For the music, the rights are still with Warner Brothers. To answer your question, film composer-conductor David Rose released a 45-rpm single of his original main title theme for FORBIDDEN PLANET, which was recorded at the old MGM Studios in March 1956. (In the 1990’s, MGM sold their lot to Sony Pictures). But there was some conflict between Rose and MGM producer, Dore Schary. Rose’s theme was the unused discarded theme he had originally been hired to compose for the film’s music score, but was discharged from the film by the end of 1955. MGM producer Dore Schary discovered The Barrons by chance at a beatnik nightclub in Greenwich Village, New York. He hired Louis & Bebe Barron on the spot, and contracted with them to re-do the film music score, the first electronic music ever heard on a theater screen. The album was released in mid 1956.
There are rumors that some of the first editions of the album contain the unused theme composed by Rose. But I can’t confirm them.
