Goodfellas (1990)
Joe Pesci’s Unique Talent on Satellite TV
Take a look at Joe Pesci and you will see right away where a boatload of talent can take someone. Let’s just say that Pesci and George Clooney are not going to be confused with one another, yet Pesci rose to the height of the film industry in the 1990’s. On the heels of his Oscar win for Scorsese’s Goodfellas, Pesci scored a number of big roles and demonstrated what type of talent he has. From serious films like JFK to madcap comedies like Home Alone or The Super, Pesci has delighted fans from a variety of different angles. If you want to see the best of Joe Pesci, check out these five films now playing on satellite TV networks.
5. The Super. What if Joe Pesci was your absentee landlord and ended up being sentenced by a judge to live in the building for code violations? Well, then you would have the idea behind this hilarious film, which pits an obnoxious Pesci against a great cast including Ruben Blades. Whether losing a game of Three-Card Monte or having his car stripped in front of the building, Pesci learns how the other half lives the hard way – to the delight of the audience. Check out this film on any of the satellite TV comedy networks.
4. JFK. There couldn’t be any further leap from Tommy in Goodfellas to David Ferrie in this film. A paranoid associate of Oswald and a CIA pawn in the 1950’s, the real David Ferrie was a disaffected genius who met his end during the investigation of the JFK assassination by Jim Garrison. Oliver Stone’s epic film is like a cannon shot – one of the finest films of the 1990’s – and cannot be missed. Pesci will open your eyes with a spirited performance. This film should only be seen in its entirety, uncut and in high definition on premium satellite TV networks like HBO.
3. Raging Bull. While Robert De Niro’s star had been on the rise for nearly a decade, critics were asking one another about Joe Pesci when this film debuted. The quiet, sensitive performance caught the attention of everyone in the film world. It was a difficult task, working opposite one of the great performances of a generation (De Niro won the Oscar in a landslide), but Pesci was more than game for it in his film debut.
2. My Cousin Vinny. America’s love affair with Joe Pesci definitely hit its stride with the release of this film, still a riot when popping up on TV. As a Brooklyn-born lawyer just getting his feet wet in the business, Pesci must face a small-town judge in the deep South to free his cousin.
1. Home Alone. Between this and the Lethal Weapon series, it’s tough to call which franchise Pesci put his mark on more. Either way you go, you’re going to have fun with the wisecracking little guy with the energy everyone loves. Check satellite TV program guides and join the fun.
