Hocus Pocus (1993)
1993 movie, Hocus Pocus question!?
Did you like the 1993 movie directed by Kenny Ortega, Hocus Pocus? If so why? If not why? I am very curious. And were the acual practicing witches during the Salem Witch Trials wiccan? In Hocus Pocus the Sanderson Sisters say they worship Satan…?
Cool question!
I adore that movie because of the fantastic performances by Midler, Parker, and Najimy. I also like the sets.
Wicca wasn’t founded until the 1950’s and is not the same thing as witchcraft. Modern witchcraft tries to use as much as we know about ancient traditions, but a lot of that information is missing from history. So it is a mixture of things, and different people practice it differently. I am not a witch so that is as much as I feel confident saying. There is no evidence that those persecuted during the Salem witch trials were practicing anything other than their Christian religion. We may never know the details behind the motives for the accusations, but arguments between neighbors, power struggles, and a desire to seize others’ properties seem to have been a significant part of the whole mess. The idea that witches worship satan is a Christian belief that goes back at least several centuries. It is/was a way to attack anything that didn’t agree with Christian doctrine. Modern witchcraft and Wicca are not related to Satanism in any way. In fact, they don’t even believe in Satan since that is a character unique to the Abrahamic religions. I don’t believe there is any real historic evidence of Satan worship and Satanism wasn’t founded until the 1960’s.

Hocus Pocus [VHS]
$4.99 This big, fat theatrical bomb has a lot going for it. There's the three leads, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, playing three resurrected witches who wreak havoc on Salem, Massachusetts, 300 hundred years after they were hung. There's music, special effects, and magic. There's a surprisingly horror-filled plot. Whoops, hold up on that last one. It's probably the extremes that ... |
