Car losses power going up hills – Hyundai Lantra 98 – sportswagon?
1998 – Hyundai Lantra SE – Sportswagon (Auto) 1.8lt
It drives well normally, but when going up hills it begins to lose power and speed even if i use more acceleration.
Scenario : On flat freeway its great then ill come to a hill and it just keeps losing power and the gears dont seem to change or they sit in a very low gear. I usually push the overdrive button and it gets more power, revs increase and I start gaining speed.
If I put it flat to the floor it blows smoke aswell.
Any answers please this is driving me crazy (no puns intended)

Have you had any trouble with the passing gear? By pushing that overdrive button, you force the transmission to downshift thereby increasing engine speed and you go faster. Most automatic transmissions won’t downshift unless they absolutely have to; most of the time full depression of the gas pedal.
