Inherit The Wind (1960)
Creation – the film?
To mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, and the 150th anniversary of his seminal work, a film of his life, called Creation has been released, starring Paul Bettany. Whether it’s a good or a bad film is a moot point.
However; I hear that it has not found a US distributor, because evolution is such a touchy subject in America. Quite why, I’m still not sure.
However, in 1960 there was a film called Inherit the Wind with Spencer Tracy. It was based on events in Scopes, Tennessee, where a teacher was put on trial for daring to teach evolution in the classroom. The film came down on the side of Darwinism. Not only did it have no trouble finding a distributor, it was nominated for four Oscars.
So; my question. Why is it that, in the last 49 years, America as a whole has become so much more narrow-minded and religiously bigoted?
It’s being released in the US in December. Part of the reason it had trouble finding a distributor is that Victorian Biopics aren’t terribly exciting.
edit: it will be distributed by Newmarket Films. And to the best of my knowledge, there was only speculation that creationists wouldn’t like it. I challenge you to find creationist protests against it, instead of strawman assertions. That’s the kind of thing the creationists do, rise above that.
