Jude (1996)
What Beatles Songs Made You Cry?
For me, it’s:
[in no particular order]
1) “Real Love” (1996, Anthology 2)
2) “Across the Universe” (1970, Let it Be)
3) “The Long and Winding Road” (1970, Let it Be)
4) “Here Comes the Sun” (1969, Abbey Road)
5) “Dear Prudence” (1968, The White Album)
6) “Good Night” (1968, The White Album)
7) “I’ll Follow The Sun” (1964, Beatles For Sale)
“In My Life” (1965, Rubber Soul)
9) “A Day in The Life” (1967, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band)
10) “For No One” (1966, Revolver)
11) “Hey Jude” (1968, single)
Hey. “Imagine” is the only Beatle’s song that truly makes me cry because it makes me think of John Lennon being so tragically killed by some raving lunatic. What a terrible, horrible loss of a great person for the whole world! Also, the message of his song is about hope and peace. “There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except as bread.” – quote by Mahatma Gandhi. “Without food, man can live at most but a few weeks; without it all other components of social justice are meaningless.” – quote by Norman Borlang. “The real and lasting victories are those of peace, and not of war.” – quote by Ralph W. Emerson. I would hope that our new US President elected in November would know more about making love and peace than making war. We SHOULD NOT be threatening Iran with obliteration for wanting to make nuclear weapons when America is making nuclear bombs and testing new weapons. That is hypocritical. There is a hunger crisis in the world right now if you listen to the news.
Most of the Beatles songs are about love and are happy songs (I am all for silly love songs.) so they do not make me cry but there is one more Beatles song that really, really gets to me. And that one is George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” which makes me think of Jesus and heaven every time. I do not know the background of this song nor of whom George was writing about but that song is extremely personal for me and touches my soul, and it also makes me cry. Also, I think of George’s untimely death cut tragically short by a cancerous brain tumor. How much pain George must have suffered! I also think about Linda McCartney dying of breast cancer, and Paul McCartney being by her side ’til the end and the song”Yesterday” which makes me feel a little sad.
My favorite Beatles album of all time is “Abbey Road”, and I am thinking about the song… “I’ll never do you no harm.” I wish it were true, and the people ‘In My Life’ were really like that so it makes me feel sad. Happy is as happy does. I am still sad about losing my friend Forrest Gump. When I hear songs that remind me of a loved one, sometimes I cry for no reason. Some of the songs that you have on your list are happy, fun loving songs so you must have taken them personally as well. Hmm. You can tell how lonely my life must be because I am writing this at 3:22am. This is not an emergency call. (smile) I am only ‘Sleepless in Seminole’. Thank you for your question. With kindest regards, ‘Jude’ aka “Eleanor Rigby”.

Anthology 3
$14.23 From the White Album to the end, the last days of the Beatles weren't smooth, which made the fact that they still produced some astonishing music all the more remarkable. In abbreviated form, "What's the New Mary Jane" is finally issued here, and proves underwhelming. For the rest of the set, it's largely down to outtakes and demos, but this time there isn't the same insight of the previous two vo... |

Music for Montserrat
$9.18 On the evening of September 15, 1997, legendary British music producer George Martin (who had risen to prominence with the Beatles) held a benefit concert at London's Royal Albert Hall for the small Caribbean island of Montserrat, which had recently been devastated by a volcanic eruption. All of the invited superstars had recorded some of their biggest hits at Montserrat's Air Studios, which Marti... |

Jude [VHS]
$14.95 British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom didn't make a particularly good film until Welcome to Sarajevo, and this curiously dry adaptation of Thomas Hardy's last novel is a good example. Christopher Eccleston plays Jude Fawley, a self-educated stonemason who dreams of attending university but identifies with the working class. Kate Winslet is his cousin Sue Bridehead, a young woman with suffragette ... |
