La Cage Aux Folles (1978)

Movies With “Bird” or “Bird Cage” in the Title But Not Actually About Birds, Exactly

“The Birds”

The classic Hitchcock film, “The Birds” is the most bird-heavy of the films in this list, and does, largely have to do with birds, but Hitchcock would never make a film that simple—about killer birds. “The Birds” is less about murderous birds than about the mystery surrounding their appearance and the story of Melanie Daniels, a wealthy socialite and how the horror jolts her out of complacency. “The Birds” is one of Hitchcock’s most straightforward films, with little in the way of twists and turns, making it prime material for a remake. A remake was reported to be in production featuring Naomi Watts and George Clooney, but no further news about the film has been heard since June, 2009, with news of original director Martin Campbell dropping out.

“To Kill a Mockingbird”

One of the best film adaptations of a novel, Harper Lee’s story about the South in America’s 1930s, about alienation and justice, is often named one of our nation’s most treasured films. Gregory Peck gave a landmark performance as lawyer Atticus Finch. He was rightly awarded Best Actor by the Academy Awards for his portrayal. I actually first saw the film in my high school film studies class, and was grateful I did, otherwise I may have never sought it out for myself. Thankfully, no one has attempted a remake of the film yet.

“The Bird cage

It seemed like a dangerous move, one that an American audience would not get and an American director could not pull off, but this adaptationi/remake of the landmark 1978 French film “La Cage aux Folles” was able to gain a significant following and did extremely well at the box office, despite being one of the most overtly gay mainstream Hollywood films. Much of that success can be given to the cast of Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman and Hank Azaria, all actors willing to go above and beyond the stereotypes to create likable and realistic characters. It is a funny, heartbreaking and entertaining movie no matter what your sexual orientation.
