La Femme Nikita (1991)

Hollywood remakes……………………?

Here’s a small sampling of Hollywood remakes. Have you seen both versions of these films? What’s your opinion of each?

Insomnia- A 1997 film with Stellan Skarsgard remade in 2002 with Al Pacino and Robin Williams

The Vanishing- A 1988 film remade in 1993. The US version had a completely different ending, though

The Ring- A 1998 movie remade in 2002

La Femme Nikita- A 1991 film remade in 1993 and retitled Point of No Return

BQ- What’s your opinion of remakes?
Hey Prof- The Keifer one was the remake.
Pirate Girl- The American version of the Ring is the remake. The original is Japanese, titled Ringu. Not sure which one you saw

Squeaky- Good call on the Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai

Sookie- Watch the original Vanishing, but with someone if you frighten easily. It’s not bloody or gory, but unnerving.

Jimmy- Don’t want to ruin it for others, but yeah, the endings were totally different.
Jimmy did vanish! Spoooooky

I’ve only seen the remake of Insomnia. It was ok. I hear the original is better, but have’t seen it.

I’m not sure which one it was, but I’ve seen the Keifer Sutherland/Nancy Travis version. Don’t really remember how much I liked it. Been many, many years and apparently it wasn’t TOO memorable.

The Ring. I only saw the remake and I liked it quite a bit.

Le Femme Nikita. Only saw the remake. It was ok.

(that’s funny, didn’t see the originals of any of those (except maybe the Vanishing)

I’m not going to say that I’ve never liked one, and I won’t say that I won’t see them, but I also wouldn’t say that it’s a good trend or that it’s fundamentally something I appreciate. Personally, I think it’s kind of like a cover song. You CAN do something really cool by taking something that has been made and remaking it with your sort of voice attached to it, but more often than not it’s a mistake to put one on an album. Also, the more well known the song/movie is, the more dangerous territory you are entering.

I think the whole thing is out of control these days though. I honestly believe that Hollywood is just getting lazy.

Thanks Juggler. I had a feeling that it was, but I wasn’t sure.
