Tina Turner
The Queen of Rock & Roll, Tina Turner is an eight time Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter, dancer, best selling author and an NAACP Image Award winning actress. Born on November 26, 1939 in Tennessee, Turner has been acknowledged as one of the world’s most popular and biggest-selling music artists of all time. Moreover, she is the most successful female rock artist of all time with record sales exceeding 180 million copies worldwide.

Besides rock music, Tina has also performed R&B, soul, dance and pop music. Listed on Rolling Stone’s list The Immortals-The Greatest Artists of All Time, she has accumulated many hit albums and singles worldwide. Needless to say that her world tour breaks every rule. She draws sea-like crowd for her sold out events at herd-to-get tickets. Turner beat out The Rolling Stones by touring Europe with 121 shows in 1990 and ended up playing to four million people in just six months.

The popular press attributes Turner to ‘the truest rock diva of all’, ‘soul’s first real diva’, ‘the most dynamic female soul singer in the history of the music’ and ‘one of soul music’s most incendiary performers’. After relocating to St. Louis in 1956, Tina started off the New Year by releasing the second single from the album titled ‘Whatever You Need’. The song became a success reaching #20 on the U.S. charts. Giving hit after hit in the following months, Tina started her Twenty Four Seven Tour. According to Pollstar, Tina Turner takes the title for highest grossing tour in the year 2000. The tour was estimated to gross well over the 100 million dollar mark.

Drawing more than three million people over the course of nine months, Tina Turner put on VERY good shows. The same year, she announced that her Twenty-Four Seven millennium tour would be her last. Based on the success of this tour, Tina Turner was the highest grossing live entertainer of 2000.

Tina married Ike in 1958. They synthesize rock with soul music as Ike & Tina Turner. She developed a unique stage persona as a singer-dancer-performer in 60s and early 70s. The highlight of her career in this period remained the Grammy she & Ike won for “Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo or Group” for a hit single “Proud Mary”.
The duo, however, parted ways after their divorce in 1978. The divorce was the result of Ike’s continuous mental and sexual abuse on Tina. Tina didn’t resurface successfully in the music scene until the mid-80s. She spent years alone and adopted Buddhism.

Tina made a comeback after a long hiatus. Before that she appeared in the movie Tommy in 1975 as the Acid Queen. Turner ended the decade by releasing her first album since her separation. Titled Rough (1978), the album featured strong readings of rock songs, demonstrating the direction in which she wished her musical career to progress. The record didn’t saw required success. It was followed by 1979’s “Love Explosion” which also failed.

Tina signed with Capitol Records in 1982 and eventually saw success with “Let’s Stay Together” released in 1984. Her single “What’s Love Got To Do With It” became her first solo #1 hit and biggest hit to date. She won Rolling Stone Magazine Critics’ Poll award and Reader’s Poll award for Female Vocalist Of The Year and R&B Artist Of The Year. She also won Billboard Music Awards for R&B Artist, Female Vocalist Of The Year and Comeback Of The Year. Surely it was a comeback in style and Tina never looked back since then.

Her next “Private Dancer” also saw success and she won 3 Grammy Awards in 1985. It remains one of the best-selling albums of all time Tina also returned to the movies with a prominent role in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Awarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in August 1985, Tina also won a Best Actress award from the NAACP for her performance in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome the same year. In July that year, Tina’s autobiography I, Tina was released worldwide. It was a huge worldwide bestseller. She received half-million dollars for writing the book before the book was even released. In the book Tina openly writes about her tough childhood and the abuse she went through with her ex-husband.
