Mephisto (1981)

What is the meaning of the last scene in the 1981 film Mephisto?

I don’t get it, does he die? What’s the deal with the Nazi bringing him to the arena and shining the lights on him? What is the significance of the ending scene?

The last line about what you have written makes what Hoefgen says even more intriguing. That is, Hoefgen had a chance to leave as many of his compatriots had already done. But he decides to stay back and thereby “sells his soul” to the regime. Once having done that, he was forced to play the part, and there was very little choice left for him but to be a collaborator.

I think, at some point, with the adulations that he continued to receive from the Nazis, he began to believe that he was a really important person for the regime. That realisation comes crashing down, when he is kicked out of the Prime Minister’s office with a warning “Do you think you matter? You can be crushed like a worm”. Interestingly, throughout the film, the Nazis were never shown as people who appreciated genuine art. They would resoundingly endorse anything that portrayed what they believed were Germanic values. Basic, uncluttered. Huge statue with large phallus in the foreground of the screen (remember the unveiling of the status?). In that sense, teh regime used him. Not because there was a tremendous appreciation of Hoefgen as an artist but to prove to the masses that the Nazis too are capable of appreciating a genuine artist, that they are not thugs (which essentially they were).

But eventually Hoefgen realised that continuing to collaborate will ultimately bring his own demise. He will also be relegated to the ranks of the other discards, may even be shot. Hence, even though the last scene seemed to portay him in the center of the 1000 year Reich, with lights shining from everywhere on him, he whimpers and scurries away from it. In his mind he had already decided that he didn’t want any part of this anymore. To answer your last question, I think the “they” are the Nazis.

One question. Was Hoefgen a true artist irrespective of his ideological stance?
