SEVEN FAMOUS AMERICANS BORN ON FEBRUARY 8TH
WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN was born in Lancaster, Ohio in the year 1820. He served as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War. He received much recognition for his outstandin command of military strategy but also criticized for his “scorched earth” policies in his total war against the Confederacy. Historian Basil Liddell Hart declared Sherman as “the first modern general.” (d. 1891)
SHERMAN “CHARLIE” RUGGLES was born in Los Angeles, California in the year 1886. He was a comic actor in a career that spanned about 60 years. He appeared in about 100 feature films. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. (d. 1970)
JACK UHLER “JACK” LEMMON III was born in Newton, Massachusetts in the year 1925. He was an actor, comedian, and director; during a career that spanned they years 1949-2000. He starred in some 60 films including Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Days of Wine and Roses, The Odd Couple, The China Syndrome, Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men. Lemmon won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1956 for Mister Roberts and Best Actor Oscar for Save the Tiger (1973). In 1988 the American Film Institute gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award. (d. 2001)
JAMES BYRON DEAN was born in Marion, Indiana in the year 1931. He was an actor who had status as a cultural icon from his role in the film Rebel Without a Cause. He starred as troubled teen, Jim Stark. Two other films he starred in were East of Eden and Giant. His fame rests only on these films, because he died at an early age. He received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor (1955). (d. 1955)
NICHOLAS KING NOLTE was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1941. He is an actor and producer (from 1959-present). He appeared in the television miniseries (1976) Rich Man, Poor Man. Since that time he’s played a wide-variety of characters in over 40 films. Nolte received the Los Angeles Film Critics Assoc., Best Actor award for his work in The Prince of Tides, Golden Globe Award (1991) also for The Prince of Tides, 1998 New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor in Affliction and also the National Society of Film Critics Best Actor also for Affliction.
EDWARD JAMES “TED” KOPPEL was born in Lancashire, England in 1940. He is a journalist and news anchor. He is best known as the anchor for Nightime from 1980 to 2005. He was also managing editor for the Discovery Channel until his resignation in 2008. Currently he is senior news analyst for National Public Radio and the British Broadcasting Corporation.
JOHN RAY GRISHAM was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1955. He is best known as a novelist with books such as The Firm, The Chamber, The Brethren, The Last Juror, and The Runaway Jury. For a while he was also politically active. In 1983 he was elected as a Democrat to the Mississippi House of Representatives. He served until 1990.
