Money For Nothing (1993)

Ignition question for my 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier?

Hey your help will be of great thanx. Anyways…when I start my car, somtimes it makes a very embarssing grinding noise. It kinda hard to explain. It happens in cycles, like it won’t do it for like 2 or 3 starts, but it gets worse from there. The engine turns over first then like the sec right after it hangs up and makes this awful noise. It almost sounds like a bad buzzer. It will continue to get worse and worse, then go back down to nothing. I just want to know whats wrong with my car. If its somthing simple, please tell me, b/c I would like to save some money doing it myself rather then taking it to a mechanic.

This is just an opinion but there are a few things it could be

First; your starter may just be loose, in that case just tighten it.( but iti would do it more often than you described)
Second; your starter could be going bad (not likely but possable) they usually do not make noiise like you are describing.
Third’; your flywheel could be missing a couple of teeth and only when the flywheel is in the proper position willl it make a noise like you are describing.
Fouth; the gear on your starter may be rounded off from normal wear and tear combined with excessive wear in a few spots on your flywheel would also cause this noise. for this replace starter, flywheel not necessary but recomended to be replaced too,
