Much Ado About Nothing (1993)

Plot point in Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’?

I love the 1993 movie version of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ but one thing has always puzzled me about the story. In the play, Count Claudio is made to believe that he has killed his beloved Hero, and to make up for it he must marry Hero’s cousin. Leonato tells him “My brother hath a daughter, almost the copy of my child that’s dead, and she alone is heir to us both.” My question is, does Claudio think he is marrying Beatrice? This would seem logical since the play establishes that Beatrice is Leonato’s brother’s daughter and Leonato says that after Hero there is only one heir between them. But I have problems with this. Why do they never refer to the woman Claudio is to marry by name if she is Beatrice? (the audience is certainly familiar with her) Why doesn’t Benedick protest when he himself has fallen in love with Beatrice? Why is nothing ever said about beforehand about Beatrice being the copy of Hero? Is this explained better in a different version of the play?

Benedict is in on the “joke” and/ or at that point in the play hasn’t made public his affection for Beatrice- as far as the world knows he is still the confirmed batchelor and would have no cause to object. As to the rest- like a lot of theater- you need to accept that certain things would not make sense in real life- the willing suspension of disbelief. The things you need to look past to make a plot work (it happens all the time). But I agree the 93 movie is a great adaptation.

Kenneth Branagh's 1993 production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is a vigorous and imaginative work, cheerful and accessible for everyone. Largely the story of Benedick (Branagh) and Beatrice (Emma Thompson)--adversaries who come to believe each is trying to woo the other--the film veers from arched wit to ironic romps, and the two leads don't mind looking a little silly at times. But the...
