What good came out of the sixties? (apart from the music)?

We are in a horrible situation today with respect to our ominous government, our society and our cultural decay the list goes on and on. Can someone please explain to me why to sixties were so good. And don’t blame the republican party, turn coat democrats or how the boomers didn’t get everything they moaned for. Why should the most indulgent generation for the last 2000 years tell me I can’t smoke? Why should the boomers who hated the government so much now tell me I need to carry my papers? etc. Back to the topic: what am I enjoying now that was a direct result of the 60s. What good did you people do? Your parents were good people…and now the time has come to explain yourself to my generation. Thank you.

Hmm… the most indulgent generation in recent history is the one just entering into the work force. They’re spoiled and have had lives where everything has been handed to them.

What good came out of the 1960’s? Art, music, cinema. Then there’s technology and science and military hardware that continues to be used and/or served as the basis for newer technologies.

No one has the right to tell you that tyou cant smoke. You’re breaking no laws. As a smoker, though, you have no right to smoke in an area where other people are exposed to your second hand smoke.

Looking specifically at Material Science, the following are examples of things which exist today because of science created, modified or spawned from the 1960’s:

- Chantex and other opiate inhibitors
- Z-Pac and other synthetic anti-biotics
- Ceramic rotors
- The home computer (the basis for which was most firmly established in the 60’s)
- Weather prediction and modelling (thanks to Edward Lorenz of MIT)
- Traffic prediction, modelling and control (kudos again to Dr. Lorenz)
- Complexity physics and later derived applications including credit card security, SSL and other online applications for security in online banking and shopping
- Sheat rock (i think officiall replaced dry wall/plaster in the 60’s)
- The M-16 (which served as the staple military rifle for decades afterwards)
- Magnetic tape – later adapted for use in betamax and VHS
- Consumer electronics implementation of IR technologies – later seen in many things include tv remote control

Do we seriously need to keep listing things? We could be here all year doing this…

If you’re pissed because you cant smoke everywhere and because you’re required to have your license and registration on you when you drive, well, I dont know what to suggest except for maybe reprioritizing.
