The relief was obvious on Mark Knopfler’s face Friday night as he and his band put the finishing touches on the Dire Straits favourite So Far Away, the penultimate song of his two-hour concert at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of Place des Arts. Two hours in occasionally visible discomfort couldn’t have been easy.

But Mark Knopfler’s country blues by way of Hank B. Marvin is what inevitably keeps the crowd excited. And it’s heartening to know that people can still get pumped up by such an unlikely-looking rock star doing little but picking a guitar and letting wonderful notes sail out into the hall.

Instead, it was a mixed bag of songs from both his time with seminal ’80s band Dire Straits, who split up n 1985, and varied older solo material like such highlights as What It Is, the bluegrass-feeling Prairie Wedding – which The Del McCoury Band has since recorded – Marbletown, and Donegan’s Gone, and the rocking showstopper Speedway At Nazareth complete with strobe lights.

Mark Knopfler, out in support of his splendid, reflective “Get Lucky” CD, brings several decades of stylistic evolution and consistent greatness. There’s the brainy rock of Dire Straits and the “I Want My MTV” years, the roots explorations of the Notting Hillbillies, and the quiet and sophisticated musicality of his later years.

Throughout his aesthetic journey, Mark Knopfler has been a tasty and clever guitar hero, an indelibly cool vocalist, and – oddly workable in the rock context – a distinguished presence.
