Norma Rae (1979)
What happens when you drink coke before going to bed?
Norma Rae had two little children. A daughter, around 7 years old, and a son, around 4-5 years old. There’s one scene from NORMA RAE (1979) where Norma Rae’s (Sally Field) daughter walks in on mommy and stepdad (Norma and Sonny) telling them that brother woke up wetting the bed. Norma helps her son to the toilet to urinate. Tucking him back in bed, Norma tells her son “No more drinking coke before going to bed!”.
Why would we have the urge to do a number 1 after drinking liquid or whatnot? What happens if we drink coke before going to bed (even without going to the bathroom)?
Caffeine does have a diuretic effect (causes the kidneys to produce more urine) and it also causes contractions in the muscles of the bladder, making it difficult for the bladder to hold as much urine as normal. In a normal healthy adult or teen, this effect is relatively minor and often won’t cause any noticeable problems even if you do drink a couple of energy drinks right before bed at night — a “normal” teen’s or adult’s bladder is large enough to contain it all regardless. However, in a small child (who likewise has a small bladder!) or in an older child or adult with a small or overactive bladder… it can and does cause the need to urinate during the night, and unless the person wakes up to use the toilet during the night, the small bladder will reach the overflowing point and the result will be a wet bed.
