Ordinary People (1980)

Would the film “Ordinary People” be more respected if it had lost the 1980 Academy Award?

Most people think it is a travesty that “Raging Bull” lost to “Ordinary People” in the 1980 Academy Awards, and, while I tend to agree with that, I also think “Ordinary People” is a great film–perhaps not Oscar-worthy (especially considering its competition), but certainly worthy of respect. I found it well-done and well-acted (if one thing, Timothy Hutton deserved his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). But most people dismiss it before even viewing it, because they know how great “Raging Bull” is. So do you think it would be more highly thought of if it had lost the Oscar?

Not really…It seems to have lost its lustre over time. I think it’s more a matter of the film not again as well as “Raging Bull” has.
