Who was in Florida during Huricane Andrew in 1992 and what happened?

I was on vacation in Florida, touring the state in 1992, and spent about two weeks hearing about the huricane and running from it.
It was scary. We were finally evacuated from Florida City, a Days Inn, at about 5 am and had to travel north to Orlando with all the heavy traffic. Luckily, we called an got a hotel right away or we would have had to sleep in our car like many did. Later after the huricane passed, we saw the news and the hotel we were in was destroyed and the sign was laying on a bunch of rubble. It was truly a nighmare.
