Unsung Heroes – Body Armor

Body armor has saved the lives of thousands of law enforcement and military personnel since its invention in 1966.  But where did this amazing armor come from?  Who created it?  Here is some of the history of body armor and what kinds are currently available on the market today.

In 1923 in a small town in Pennsylvania called New Kensington, Stephanie Kwolek was born.  A talented chemist, she graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) in 1946.  She was hired by the DuPont Company and would work there for the next forty years.  One of her research projects was with "high performance chemical compounds."  This in turn led her to develop a new synthetic material that would change the way law enforcement protected themselves.  Kevlar was patented in 1966 as an amazing new material that did not corrode or rust and was five times stronger than steel.  Today, Kevlar is used not only in bulletproof vests and body armor but in "underwater cables, brake linings, space vehicles, boats, parachutes, skis, and building materials…Kevlar is also flame resistant; does not melt, soften, or flow; and the fiber is unaffected by immersion in water."  It is cut resistant and provides "flash protection" to four hundred and twenty seven degrees Celsius.

As amazing as this material is, it was only one of the twenty-eight different patents that Stephanie Kwolek would hold.  In 1995, she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for her historically important work.  The way Kevlar works is just as fascinating as the material itself.  "When a handgun bullet strikes body armor, it is caught in a "web" of very strong fibers. These fibers absorb and disperse the impact energy that is transmitted to the vest from the bullet, causing the bullet to deform or "mushroom." Additional energy is absorbed by each successive layer of material in the vest, until such time as the bullet has been stopped."

Kevlar 29, introduced in the early 1970s, was the first generation of bullet resistant fibers developed by DuPont and helped to make the production of flexible, concealable body armor practical for the first time. In 1988, DuPont introduced the second generation of Kevlar fiber, known as Kevlar 129. According to DuPont, this fabric offered increased ballistic protection capabilities against high energy rounds such as the 9mm FMJ. In 1995, Kevlar Correctional was introduced, which provides puncture resistant technology to both law enforcement and correctional officers against puncture type threats.

The newest addition to the Kevlar line is Kevlar Protera, which DuPont made available in 1996. DuPont contends that the Kevlar Protera is a high-performance fabric that allows lighter weight, more flexibility, and greater ballistic protection in a vest design due to the molecular structure of the fiber. Its tensile strength and energy-absorbing capabilities have been increased by the development of a new spinning process.  Kevlar body armor has significantly improved the mortality rate of law enforcement personnel and been a major asset both in training and field work for military and law enforcement personnel.  For that and incalculable amounts of saved lives, Stephanie Kwolek deserves praise and thanks.

This post-modern comic variation on The Defiant Ones concerns Keats (Damon Wayans), an undercover police detective trying to get the goods on crime kingpin Frank Colton (James Caan). Keats poses as a crook to make friends with one of Colton's underlings, a drug dealer and car thief named Archie Moses (Adam Sandler). Keats is using Archie as part of a sting operation to put Colton away; however, Archie doesn't care for this, and when he finds out Keats's true plan and actual identity, it leads to an altercation that ends with Archie shooting Keats in the head. Several months later, Keats emerges from the hospital with a metal plate in his skull, and he has to bring Archie in. However, now Archie and Keats are both on Colton's enemies list, and the two find themselves on the run in Arizona, trying to outwit Colton's team of assassins, but having Archie on hand doesn't do much good in the outwitting department. Bulletproof was directed by Ernest Dickerson, who got his start as a cinematographer for Spike Lee. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Fidelis Cloer is a salesman from Germany who has enjoyed a surprising windfall as a result of the long war in Iraq -- he works for a company that manufactures armored and bulletproof vehicles that have become popular with Iraqi officials and representatives of international firms doing business in the country. While war has boosted his business, Cloer resents being called a war profiteer, insisting (not incorrectly) that he's not selling weapons but safety, though as Iraqi guerillas become better at creating improvised explosive devices, his designers must constantly improve their vehicles to stand up to the destructive force. As Cloer puts it, "We do not create the demand. The demand is here." Filmmakers Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein, who previously looked at the lives of American soldiers in Iraq with their documentary Gunner Palace, profile Cloer and the business of selling a bit of safety in an unsafe land with their film Bulletproof Salesman. The picture was an official entry at the 2008 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

How do you stop a speeding bullet? From body armor to armored cars and trucks we review the history of the race between the bullet and a successful way to stop it. It's not exactly easy to design material that can catch gunfire traveling up to 3000 feet per second. We'll look at little-known advances like bulletproof layering hidden in walls futuristic smart materials that "remember" how to stop a bullet and a system that deploys a shield within milliseconds when it detects an oncoming round.
