Twenty Bucks (1993)

Do You Have Galloping Tb

Do you have Galloping TB? Know I don’t mean do you have Galloping Tuberculosis, what I mean is do you have Galloping True Believers Syndrome.

Galloping TB was a phrase first coined by a character played by the actor Billy Bob Thornton in the 1992 film Primary Colours, and what it means in a nut shell is that the general public becomes stare eyed about a particular political leader. While this syndrome is not that common in Australia, it is very common in the United States. We are seeing it right now in relation to the current Republican Vice Presidential hopeful.

Further examples of the Galloping TB Syndrome occurring within the American voting population over the years have been in the 1960, 1972, 1980 and1992 Presidential elections. On each of those occasions a small group of devoted follows of one of the Presidential candidates developed this syndrome which eventually created a movement which infected the whole country and ultimately the outcome of the election. Don’t get me wrong in some cases this had a good impact for America and the world, but more often than not when this syndrome develops within a voting population it will ultimately lead to feeling of disappointment and betrayal when the person they have elected lets them down.

As I said previous Galloping True Believers Syndrome is not as common in Australia, and I believe in part this is because, the Australia psyche has always been one of don’t get to big for you boots or we will cut you down. However in saying that the Australian voting population has not always been completely immune from catching Galloping TB. Examples of where Galloping TB has developed in Australia are with the election of the Labor governments in 1972, 1983, the re-election of the labor government in 1993 and the election of the Coalition government in 1996.

On each of these occasions the parties had a very strong leader who turned the focus of the electorate onto them more than the substantive policy issues. On each of these occasions that leader, the government or both would ultimately crash and burn, when the Australian voting public became disappointed, betrayed and let down. So what are the symptoms of Galloping True Believers Syndrome?

  1. You are drawn to what the candidate has in common with you as a person more than what they have to offer on the substantive issues, e.g. you come from the same religion as the candidate.

  2. You will agree with the candidate know matter what they say or do.

  3. You will ignore anyone else’s opinion of the candidate even if that opinion has some validity.

  4. You will go around with blinkers on dismissing other candidate policies and positions simply on the basis that they are from the opposition. And

  5. You put the candidate on a pedestal and treat them as god.

So ultimately how do we cure Galloping True Believers Syndrome? Well we can’t really, and that is why it is so dangerous during an election cycle, because it can in some cases lead to the wrong result for the country and the world.

This fascinating chronicle of the life and times of a twenty dollar bill was originally written by Endre Boehm in 1935 and languished forgotten on the shelf until his son Leslie resurrected it after his father's death, and updated the script. (Both received screenwriter credit for the released version). The scrap of currency's journey begins after it is spit out of a downtown Minneapolis ATM machine into the hands of a busy young mother. It's a windy day, and the crisp bill is blown out of her hands into those of a bag lady who uses it on the lottery because she believes the serial numbers are lucky. Unfortunately, the bill is plucked from her hands by a light-fingered skate boarder who uses the money at a local bakery. From there the bill's odyssey takes it to a wide variety of places including a wedding, a stripper's g-string, a con artist's scam, and a robbery. It ends up used as a note pad, a birthday present, a coaster, and a fishing contest trophy. Interestingly, every one who encounters the bill changes in some way. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Mario Van Peebles, Billy Zane and Stephen Baldwin shake up the frontier in this "fast-paced, star-studded, big brawny Western"(Janet Maslin,TheNewYork Times)! Filled with gun-blazing, fist-pounding action and co-starring Big Daddy Kane, Blair Underwood, Tone Loc, Pam Grier, Isaac Hayes, Nipsey Russell, Aaron Neville and more, Posse takes a page missing from the history books - and unfolds it with suspense, humor and awe-inspiring power! In 1892, a group of mostly black infantrymen, betrayed by their white commander, Colonel Graham (Zane), desert the Spanish-American War. With Graham hot on their trail, Jessie Lee (Van Peebles) leads the men to his hometown, Freemanville, only to find it's also besieged by war - a racist war! Lee's attempts to bring justice and freedom to his people make for a brilliant Western that's short on words and long on "killer entertainment" (Los Angeles Times)!
