Which film adaptation of On the Beach (by Nevil Shute) do you prefer?

It was first adapted to the screen in 1959 and remade in 2000. Which do you prefer? I haven’t seen it yet but I started reading the novel and will watch it on the screen at some point. Does the modernization of the remake affect the story’s quality and who would you have chosen to play the roles instead?

the first one with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins is so much better.
