The Bridge (1999)

Deadly Effects Of Tobacco

The Surgeon General said:

“Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States.”

This statement was made back in 1982 and unfortunately, according to the powers-that-be, it is still true today. The thing is; these deaths are preventable. Smoking is an acquired habit.

Cancer is not the only harmful health danger in smoking. As a matter of fact a little less than half of the deaths directly linked to tobacco use by researchers are caused by heart disease, aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema, and stroke, and it makes pneumonia and asthma worse.

Researchers also tell us that using tobacco can cause damage to a woman’s reproductive system. Infertility rates are higher among tobacco users and there is a higher risk for miscarriage, premature birth, still birth, infant death and low birth-weight among smokers as well.

According to information collected between 1995 and 1999 by the CDC, men lost about 13 years of healthy life and women lost a little more than 14 years of healthy life because of smoking.

These statistics don’t just include death rates but also include smokers who suffer from one or more smoking related diseases or health problems like chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

There are more than 4000 different chemicals that have been identified in tobacco smoke. Sixty are known to cause cancer.

There are others like ammonia, tar and carbon monoxide that are known to cause other health problems. Many of the chemicals that have been identified in tobacco smoke are substances that there is simply no research available for to determine what health problems could result.

Nicotine is the addictive chemical in tobacco. About 70% of smokers say that they want to quit. About 40% try to quit smoking every year but only about 5% succeed.
The Bottom Line

Don’t start smoking!

  • Don’t start smoking!
  • If you are a smoker, beat the odds and quit!
