The first thirty-minute show introduced was As the World Turns in 1956 and started a trend that by the end of the 1960’s all shows were thirty minutes long.

Trends tended to be shown on television such as when there was the first workingwoman shown on television through the soap opera.

Soap Operas are popular all over the world, in countries like Australia and Korea they are extremely popular and followed by fans all over the world.

Some Female Theorist have said that soap opera appeal to women because of the feminine aesthetic which is missing from primetime television which caters more towards men because women may enjoy the stories more because it is not so linear as to have a beginning, middle and end and also if women are working around the house they do not have to pay perfect attention to the story.

The longest running soap opera in the United Kingdom is Coronation Street, which began in 1960 and is watched by about one-third of the population.
