What is your dark at the top of the stairs?
There was a movie made in 1960 with that title. I was about our secret fears an how we deal with them. In a literal sense it was about a five year old boys fear of going to the top of the stairs when it was dark, and it a grownup sense it was a fear of losing one’s job or losing one’s spouse.
Desertion.
It’s always been the one thing that scares me more than anything. And I’ll be honest… I know exactly the reasons why I fear it. So you would think understanding why I feel this way would help me not to fear it so. But I think it does the opposite. I fear it so that I almost obsess about it. When someone just disappears out of my life….. or I can’t find them….. or I can’t get ahold of them for a long period of time……. I kind of fall apart in a way. Not in a way that all people will notice. But I lose a part of me that just……. goes POOF and I can’t function correctly until I understand where they are and if they are ok and why they left.
Yep, my “dark at the top of the stairs” is my fear of desertion.
