The End (1978)

1978 ford 4wd transmission swap? gearing swap? Advice?

I have a 1978 ford f250, 4spd manual tranny. Very low geared. It’ll cruise 60-70 but at very high rpm’s. I really would prefer to swap to an auto tranny but I don’t want to lose all of my low end torque. Would this help or would I be better off swapping the gears and if I swap the rear do the front axle gears also need swapped? I’ve been told that the tranny and transfer case are married. Does that mean I can’t use my current transfer case and drive lines? Are there any websites regarding this topic? Thanks

First a ‘married’ transfer case just means that the Transfer case bolts directly to the transmission. A divorced transfer case has a small driveshaft between the transmission and it.

Truck is a camper special? I believe the gearing was 4.11 in the F-250 camper specials.

If you find a C-4 or C-6 from a 4wd truck close to the same year it will bolt right in. You will lose some torque with the switch from a manual to an auto. The slippage in the auto tranny will eat some of the torque.

If you want to change the gearing, the fronts also need to be changed if you want to use your 4wd on it.

Few rock concert documents can match this 1978 live album for sheer musicianship, or for its full-blooded representation of one of the best live bands ever. Little Feat's turbulent '70s pilgrimage had been studded with commercial detours when its second incarnation as a swampy, blues-rock sextet clicked musically, and these English and American dates, beautifully recorded by George Massenburg, cap...

Evita was Andrew Lloyd Webber's last show with Tim Rice before he went on to projects with less interesting collaborators, so it's no surprise that it remains his most consistently involving and rewarding work. Loosely based on the life of Eva Peron, the charismatic wife of post-World War II Argentine president Juan Peron, Rice's compelling story of one woman's rise from poverty to power is comple...

Bernard Slade's smart, funny, and touching play about an adulterous couple who meet one weekend a year for 26 years is nicely adapted for the screen by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) in this 1978 film. The two-person story stars Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, both of whom are outstanding at conveying a rainbow of emotions over a quarter-century as life gives and takes away, and the world co...

Burt Reynolds directed and stars in this dark comedy, which suffers from diminishing returns the longer it goes on. He plays a fellow who discovers that he has a terminal illness and wants to spare himself and everyone he knows the seemingly unavoidable end of a painful malady. So he decides to kill himself. But he proves surprisingly inept at it and after several tries winds up in a mental hospit...
