how can you tell which European trains have compartments?

I’ve been to Europe a long time ago ( 1979) and had great 1st class seating with our Eurail Pass. I then went in 1987 and we took an over night train from France to ? I don’t remember destination, but it was a new train with HORRIBLE plastic molded seats. I am short so the area that is molded out hit my head pushing it forward. We both ended up with neck and headaches. I had been expecting the fantastic 6 seat 1st class compartments with seats that slide together. sometimes you are lucky to not have a full compartment and stretch out. We did this all the time on my first trip. I am seeing pictures of seating that look like all seats are together in one car, no compartments.How can you tell by the type of train, or its listing what type of seating it has ?

Unfortunately, the majority, if not all, modern European trains now have ‘airline seating’, in other words open carriages, rather than separate compartments. It’s all a question of packing more passengers per carriage. Whilst the old style compartments were, I agree, much more comfortable, they have in the main been done away with. I agree, the seating in the modern trains can be uncomfortable. I’m in the UK and 5′10” tall. I have problems in some stock in having enough room for my legs. I am not sure, however, whether overnight trains in continental Europe still have ‘couchettes’, compartments that can be made into beds, such as you describe. If they have, they will be so described in the details of the particular train, and you may have to pay a small supplement for using them.
