The Good Wife (1986)
Charging problem w/ my 1986 Ford Tempo. Prev owner replaced 14 ga FL w/ 30 a fuse. Fuse blows when starting?
car. Alt tested at Advance auto good, batt fully charged. Cleaned all connections & checked all the wiring, all looks good. All static volt checks good. When starting fuse blows, alt lite comes on and only show 12 v at batt with eng running at any speed. I have run out of ideas and really need to get this thing running (wife wants her car back). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This unit has an internal regulator (on the back of the alternator). When I had it tested the last time the guy at advance auto tested it for about 5-10 mins under full load so I know it’s not heat / vibration related. Will try replacing the FL and see what happens. Will keep you advised.
Checked ALL the wireing today. All looks good. Put a new 14 ga FL in place of the 30 A fuse…… Now I can’t get it to fire. Go figure! Look like it’s back to the drawing board.
I would put the fusible link back on it. If this does not work, take it to an auto electric shop. You do not want to mess with wiring, it could short out and cause a fire.
The other thing is to go with a one wire alternator and go directly to the battery. The pos. side.
But try the new fuse link first. You can buy one at the auto parts store.
But, remember, the link blew for a reason. And be careful.
If it blows again, take to the shop.
