Matthew has two fulfillments.

One is back then over 30 years after Jesus died. Thje saw the disgusting thing, the Roman armies, inside the Temple grounds at Jerusalem. That was the sign for all faithful ones to Jesus to run, not walk to the exits for the mountains. For no reason known even today, the Roman armies left just at that time.

The Jews in their arrogance, thought they had won and beaten the Roman army.

Only some obeyed Jesus’ order to run, don’t waste tie to pack. Bandits betwen jerusalem and the mountains did not bother them as they had n othing to steal.

Other obeyed Jesus partially. They stopped to pack belongings. These the bandits were happy to rob and to kill.

In just a short while, the Romans came back to slaughter every Jew they saw. Men, women, children, it did not matter.

Today, it has a second fulfillment larger than the original. Today the disgusting thing is the great harlot, Babylon the Great. It is all the world’s false religions combined. It has killed God’s true faithful servants in favor of its own brand of depraved teachings. Revelation 17 tells of its impending death at the hands of the very governments it has been in bed with for so long. Rev. 17:17 shows it is God who will put it into their minds to do this.

Rev. 18:4 gives us an angels warning, much like Matthews. To get out of Babylon the Great if you do not want to share in her plagues. Flee to God’s place of safety with his other faithfull ones.

It is simply if we obey, we live. If we do not or partially obey, we die. This is how God always operates. He warns people about what he is going to do. He provides a way out for his faithful ones who obey him. Then he does what he says he will do.
