How can I break my horrible old ’70s oven/stove so my landlord has to replace it?
He is so stupid and won’t pay for anything around here.. it’s the ORIGINAL stove from 1970.. it either heats way too hot, not right, or takes forever. And it’s just plain UGLY. I don’t want it to be obvious, like taking an axe to it though. Haha.. thanks(:
Call your utility company & have them send out a technician to inspect it. If it’s gas….say that you smell gas & you think you have a leak. If it’s electric…say that it’s sparking when you turn it on. If the tech says it’s unsafe to use, they will RED TAG it & then the landlord HAS to get you a new one!
If he (landlord) won’t fix it, then use the red tag as a reason to to spend your own money on a replacement stove & when it comes time to pay the rent, give your landlord a copy of the receipt for the stove with a copy of the red tag fix-it order. If they scream about it….take it to court. I doubt the will scream.
I have an old electric Kenmore & it was in the house when I moved it. Just last week, I decided to try my hand at broiling some meat in the upper oven. The next day, when I turned it on to preheat it, it started sparking in the back of the stove. When I looked inside, I could clearly see the heating element in the right hand rear back corner glowing red, bending & sending sparks out! I shut it down & now will only use the bottom oven.
Apparently, all that grease made an already weak area fail & it shorted itself out! It was the first & last time I used high heat broil & the last. The bottom oven doesn’t have a top element on it & they don’t make part for mine anymore. It’s ugly & I don’t like it, but it’s all that I have for now.
Yours might need a simple adjustment…the technician will tell you what it needs free of charge.
Gas is usually an easy appliance to fix compared to an electric. You can always fix UGLY with a can of spray paint for metal that gets hot.
You can find it in the auto department or the paint store.
You can buy a thermomenter that sits inside your oven or hangs on the rack, for 99.9 cents at the 99 cent store. All other dollars store carry them.
My own oven is 50 degrees off. When I need it to be 400, I must set it at 450 & check it by sight. It’s a pain, but I stopped burning stuff after I installed it! Good luck.
