The Last Game (1964)

How Aware are You of the ‘Generation Game’?

When you start an internet business it’s important to remember that your customers can’t meet you face-to-face when they’re buying – or touch your products. The more you know about your customers the better it will be for you to build a relationship with them – and hopefully, they’ll keep buying from you.

This new report from the UK has broken down the five generations – some may even be your ideal customers. It explains how the five generations differ and their attitudes to life.

1. Generation Z

Aged under 18 | Just entering the workforce/college | More technically savvy

2. Generation Y

Born between 1979 and 1991 | Aged between 18-29 | Like to ’stay in touch’ | 94% have mobile/cell phones | 97% own a computer | 75% have a Facebook account

3. Generation X

Born between 1964-1978 | Aged between 30 and 44 | Independent | Seek stability | They work to live | 44% read blogs | Facing challenges with recession

4. Baby boomers

Born between 1948-1963 | Aged between 45-60 | Live to work, great part of their life | Want challenges in life | Access to development | Socially responsible

5. Veterans

Born before 1948 | Aged 60+ | Traditionalists | 50% have spent more than 10 years with their current employer

Start to undertake market research on your ideal clients. Each generation may need something different from your business, you just have to work out what it is. For example, if generation Y likes to keep in touch, make sure you have a ‘Contact Us’ page on your blog or website for them to do just that.

Many baby boomers are now looking for new challenges, and many have a sense of social responsibility. Whilst veterans take a more traditional look on life… so it’s just a case of ‘horses for courses’.
