The Miracle (1959)

The pesticide DDT was at one time referred to as a “miracle” pesticide. Its widespread use in the united?

States peaked in 1959, but then usage steadily declined until its ban in late 1972. Reasons for declining usage included increased insect resistance and pulic concern over potentially harmful environmental effects. how did this concern affect the field of agricultural science?A.it led to the development of equally harmful herbicides.B.it encouraged farmers to violate the ban and increase the use of ddt.C.it led to the development of more effective, alternative pesticides.D.it encouraged farmers to reduce the number of crops grown in their fields.

DDT was not an herbicide. It was over-used as a pesticide. Since farmers could not get DDT, they could not use it after the ban.

Other farm pesticides already existed, there were multiple patents for pesticides both before and after the introduction of DDT. Chlordane Aldrin, Endrin, Dieldrin, pyrethins, phosphorothioates etc. Some were more toxic than DDT, other less so. Most of the phosphorothioates and pyrethins are less stable than DDT and would break down to less harmful residues fairly quickly.

Without being an authority on this though I do know something of it, I expect that the alternatives were used, possibly in reduced or increased dosages and perhaps better adapted to the particular problem than the one-size- fits-all use of DDT. These might or might not have been more effective alternatives.

The alternative of not planting the same crop year after year also occurred to some people, a method used since ancient times.
