The Next Best Thing (2000)
Better to put away for retirement or pay the house off?
I have a 148,000 mortgage with 5.5%. It’s a 15 year mortgage that I just started working on now. I make a few extra payments here and there, but with a 15 year it seems you have to really up the payments to make a large time difference in getting the place paid off. I am currently putting 4000 a year away into a ROTH IRA as well as contributing 350 a pay period (every two weeks) to my company’s 401K. This is really about all I can do right now, but I will be getting a 12% raise within the next year or so and be eligible for overtime, which I am not now, so I expect to have some money to work with soon. I am trying to figure out if I would be better off trying to max my 401 K out (15,500 a year is the max, of which they match 2000) or if I’d be better off trying to get the house paid off as quick as possible to save on interest. I am 26 years old and single. Other than marrying rich, I am trying to do the best thing to help me retire by 50. Thanks for your help.
Save the money to pay off the house. I have the same thing as you a new 15 year mortgage. Say you send 20,000 to the mortgage company it would shorten your mortgage. The same 20,000 sent to an investment account would be available in emergencies or for other investment. At your age I would invest in taxable investments like mutual funds. Once you have as much in your mutual funds as the balance on your mortgage you could pay it off or not, your choice. Choice is good, sending to the mortgage company reduces your choices.

Aijuswanaseing
$7.08 Has neo-soul been around long enough to already have throwbacks? The ostentatiously named Musiq Soulchild seems to think so. The vibe on his debut album, Aijuswanaseing, feels an awful lot like the one D'Angelo first got folks all hot and sweaty with (way back in 1995, with the now-classic Brown Sugar). Musiq even liberally borrows from "Brown Sugar" on "L Is Gone," when he croons, "Skin caramel c... |

The Next Best Thing: Music From The Motion Picture
$11.80 The obvious centerpiece to this soundtrack is Madonna's hyperkinetic version of Don McLean's 1971 postmortem rock anthem "American Pie." Capturing the bittersweet intentions of the original, Madonna and producer William Orbit create a forlorn dreamscape of dance beats and floating electronica effects that serve to update the sentimental war horse. The entire soundtrack has a futuristic sheen. Th... |

The Next Best Thing [VHS]
$0.01 You'd be hard-pressed to find a modern-day couple as impossibly glamorous as Rupert Everett and Madonna; their casting as common folk in the gay-parenting drama The Next Best Thing is just one of the film's myriad problems. (One thing we never needed to see was these two pushing grocery carts in a supermarket. It's just unnatural.) Best friends in sun-dappled L.A. (he's a landscaper, she's a yog... |
